What you'll learn
Over the course of your training you'll learn a wide range of kickboxing techniques, building up to longer combinations as your fitness and coordination improve.

The building blocks
Kicks
- Front kick
- Push kick
- Turning kick
Punches
- Jab
- Cross
- Hook
Elbows & knees
- Elbow strikes
- Knee strikes
Conditioning
- Medicine ball work
- Wall bags
- Bodyweight drills
Elbows and knees too
As well as kicks and punches, you'll learn elbow and knee strikes on the bags and pads. They're some of the hardest-working moves in the class: short, powerful and brilliant for your core.
The goal is to keep your heart rate up and build fitness and stamina, while making sure every strike is thrown with good technique.
Your instructor builds each new technique up step by step, from a slow, careful version to a full-speed combination, so you can add power without risking injury.
Play it smart from the start
At about 70%. For your first few weeks, learn the kicks, punches and routines without blowing up.
Push harder. Finish every class with a real sweat.
Over the months, bring that effort earlier until you can go strong from start to finish.

Kickboxing techniques: quick answers
What kickboxing techniques will I learn?
Kicks (front kick, push kick and turning kick), punches (jab, cross and hook), elbow and knee strikes, and conditioning drills, building up to longer combinations.
Is there sparring?
No. Fitness kickboxing is non-contact. You only strike bags, towers and pads.
Do I need to be flexible to kick?
No. You kick at whatever height is comfortable and your range improves as you train.
Will I learn self-defence?
Fitness kickboxing is a workout, though you'll learn to strike with real power. For self-defence, see our Japanese Jujutsu classes.
What is a turning kick?
A kick that swings round in an arc and strikes with the shin or instep. It's one of the most powerful kicks you'll learn.
What is a jab?
A fast, straight punch with your lead hand. It sets up most combinations.
Why learn knees and elbows?
They're short, powerful strikes that work your core hard and add variety to your combinations.
Will I learn combinations?
Yes. You start with single strikes and build up to longer combinations as your fitness and coordination improve.
The hardest part is the first step.
