Martial arts for adults
Want more than a workout? At the same Thornbury dojo you can learn Japanese Jujutsu for real-world self-defence, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) for a hard workout and ground fighting.

BJJ is grappling on the mats: takedowns, positions, escapes and submissions. Every class is a full-body workout that builds strength, flexibility and fitness, and you learn to handle yourself if a fight ever ends up on the ground.
- A hard, technical full-body workout
- Ground fighting: positions, escapes and submissions
- Friendly, ego-free training partners
- Ages 16+
Kickboxing plus martial arts
Plenty of our members combine fitness kickboxing with Japanese Jujutsu or BJJ: kickboxing for fitness, martial arts for skills. Ask us about adding martial arts when you come in for your free kickboxing classes.
“At various times I’ve done adults Japanese Ju Jitsu, Fitness Kickboxing and now Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I’ve always felt welcomed in class, supported to improve and pushed to the level I feel comfortable with.”

Martial arts: your questions answered
What is the difference between Japanese Jujutsu and BJJ?
Japanese Jujutsu is a complete self-defence system: joint locks, chokes, striking, submissions, and later knife defence and weapons. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) focuses on grappling on the ground: positions, escapes and submissions, and it's a hard full-body workout.
Which martial art is best for self-defence?
For practical self-defence we recommend Japanese Jujutsu. It covers standing attacks, strikes, holds and weapons, not just fighting on the ground.
When are adult martial arts classes on?
Japanese Jujutsu: Monday to Thursday 7:15pm, Tuesday and Thursday 9:30am, Saturday 12:45pm. BJJ: Monday and Wednesday 7:15pm, Saturday 12:45pm. Classes are 90 minutes.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Adults Martial Arts (Japanese Jujutsu) starts with 4 free classes plus a free uniform, and BJJ starts with $99 for up to 12 classes over 4 weeks plus a uniform. Book on the Guest's Martial Arts website.
What age do you start adult classes?
Adult classes are for ages 16+, with 16 and 17 year olds training as Young Adults. For younger students, see kids and teen programs.
Can I do kickboxing and martial arts?
Yes. Plenty of members combine fitness kickboxing for fitness with Japanese Jujutsu or BJJ for skills, all at the same Thornbury dojo.
Do I need a uniform?
Wear comfortable clothes for your first classes. Both trials include a uniform.
Are martial arts classes beginner-friendly?
Yes. Most adult students start with no experience.
How long are martial arts classes?
90 minutes.
